On its last day, the Republic convention votes in favor of an Australian republic. But the vote is split between those who want a president chosen by a two-thirds majority of both houses of Parliament, those who want a popularly elected president - and those who want the Queen to stay put. Staunchly royallist Prime Minister John Howard immediately calls for a referendum, but he's not particularly worried.
